ASPIRE
Framework

ASPIRE is an adoption-informed framework developed to deepen understanding of the psychological impact of separation and adoption across the lifespan. It brings together psychological theory, trauma-informed practice, lived experience and emerging research within a structured framework for understanding, education and continued inquiry.

Understanding the Impact of Adoption Separation
ASPIRE recognises that the psychological impact of adoption can extend beyond the circumstances of adoption itself. Separation, identity, belonging, attachment, loss and lived experience can interact across the lifespan in complex and individual ways.
The framework provides a structured way to explore these experiences without assuming that every adoptee is affected in the same way.
What ASPIRE Examines
ASPIRE explores the interconnected psychological and lived-experience dimensions that can shape an adoptee’s experience across the lifespan. Rather than viewing these experiences in isolation, the framework considers how patterns of separation, attachment, identity, belonging, loss, rejection, shame, self-worth and relationships may interact and evolve over time.
How the Framework Is Structured
ASPIRE is organised across interconnected domains that provide a structured way of understanding adoption-related psychological experience. Each domain brings together relevant constructs, lived-experience patterns and theoretical foundations, while recognising that experiences may overlap and influence one another across the lifespan.

The framework is not intended to define an adoptee by a set of difficulties. It provides a way to identify, understand and give language to experiences that may otherwise feel disconnected or difficult to explain.
